The Swamp

It seems that few are happier about President Bush's hiring of Fox News commentator Tony Snow as White House press secretary today than the Democratic National Committee and its many minions.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has circulated a press release highlighting the more critical comments that Snow has made about Bush -- Snow once suggesed that "the English language has become a minefield for the man.'' Now, Snow has had plenty of positive things to say about Bush, calling the president's foreign policy "brilliant,'' for instance.

Yet while the White House has asserted today that Snow's "strong views" are "a good thing,'' the president's aides may soon grow weary of old Snow words coming back to haunt them at every turn of the public policy debate. The Democratic Party's work is posted below -- with Republican Party opposition (or is it support?) research welcome at this site any time. In the meantime, in pursuit of the ideal that life really is fair, we include below a collection of Snow compliments courtesy of the Republican National Committee, including one from Demoratic Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, quoted today as saying: "The president's very lucky to have a man of Tony Snow's caliber take this job on. ''

This is from the DSCC:

Considering how critical he has been of George Bush and his handling of fiscal spending, security, and domestic policy, it will be curious to see how Tony Snow steps into his role as White House spokesman. The following is a short compilation of some of Snow’s greatest hits on George Bush and the White House as well as a collection of his more memorable quotes on a number of social issues, including a defense of David Duke and his claim that “racism isn't that big a deal anymore.”

ON GOP/BUSH ADMINISTRATION

2006: Snow Said Bush Looks “Guilty.” In light of Bush’s mishandling of Hurricane Katrina, the Dubai ports deal, and plummeting approval ratings, Snow said “…you ever seen those guilty guys in a court case, you know, the guilty guys are sitting passively? That's what the president looks like…” [Fox News, 3/4/06]

2005: Snow Said Bush Looks Impotent. “No president has looked this impotent this long when it comes to defending presidential powers and prerogatives.” [Snow Column, 9/30/05]

2006: Snow Said Bush “Lost Control” of Budget. In his syndicated column, Snow wrote, “A Republican president and a Republican Congress have lost control of the federal budget and cannot resist the temptation to stop raiding the public fisc. George W. Bush and his colleagues have become not merely the custodians of the largest government in the history of humankind, but also exponents of its vigorous expansion.” [Snow Column, 3/17/06]

2005: Snow Called Bush an “Embarrassment” Following the Democratic electoral wins in 2005, Snow said that “…George Bush has become something of an embarrassment.” [Snow Column, 11/11/05]

2006: Snow Criticized Bush’s Domestic Policy Commenting on Bush’s State of the Union Address, Snow called Bush’s domestic policy “listless.” [Snow Column, 2/3/06]

2000, 2003: Snow Found Fault with Bush’s Fiscal Policies. Snow has sharp words for Bush on his lack of “spending restraint.” In 2003, Tony Snow said, “When it comes to federal spending, George W. Bush is the boy who can’t say no. In each of his three years at the helm, the president has warned Congress to restrain its spending appetites, but so far nobody has pushed away from the table mainly because the president doesn’t seem to mean what he says.” In 2000, Snow said Bush “will shovel money into programs that enjoy undeserved prestige, such as Head Start.” [The Detroit News, 12/28/03; Snow Column, 8/25/00 ]

2000: Snow Took Bush to Task On His Grammar. In 2000, Snow said Bush got “his father’s syntax. At one point last week, he stunned a friendly audience by barking out absurd and inappropriate words, like a soul tortured with Tourette’s.” In the same column, Snow wrote that “The English Language has become a minefield for the man, whose malaprops make him the political heir not of Ronald Reagan, but Norm Crosby.” [Snow Column, 8/25/00]

2004: Snow Criticized Bush’s CIA. Snow said, “We have now got a CIA that is largely incapable of putting human assets, spies on the ground, and seeing things. And furthermore, there's a huge deficit of people who can even speak languages, such as Arabic, to be able to blend in with the local culture.” [The O'Reilly Factor, 7/9/04]

ON SOCIAL ISSUES

2003: “Racism Isn’t That Big a Deal Anymore.” In October 2003, Snow defended Rush Limbaugh’s controversial comments that Donovan McNabb was overrated and that reporters are disposed towards black quarterbacks. “The comment wasn't racist,” Snow said, “but that did not stop political opportunists from accusing Rush of bias.” Snow added, “Racism isn't that big a deal anymore.” [“Fox News Sunday,” 10/5/03, emphasis added]

1991: Snow Defended David Duke. In 1991, then-White House speechwriter Tony Snow defended former KKK leader David Duke, saying, “Duke is talking about things people really care about: high taxes, crummy schools, crime-ridden streets, welfare dependency, equal opportunity. A lot of politicians aren't talking about these things.” [Chicago Tribune, 11/20/91]

2005: Snow Thinks Calling Racism Systemic Is “Making Excuses” In June 2005, Snow said that calling racism and poverty systemic is “making excuses” for cultural problems in the U.S. rather than trying to understand the situation of the poor. “When you say systemic, it sounds like you're trying to make excuses…in other words, it sounds like you're giving people a copout.” [The O’Reilly Factor, 6/30/05]

1999: Snow Said Keyes “Cries Racism” Too Often. In a discussion on the Republican presidential primary candidates, Snow accused Republican Alan Keyes of “crying racism” too often. Snow said, “He does have a penchant for crying racism … When he was at the State Department and he was the hot – the higher-ups there were not listening to him, he blew up and accused them of racism as well.” [Fox Special Report With Brit Hume; 12/3/99]

1998: Snow Loves The “Least Politically Correct” Holiday. In 1998, Tony Snow commented that he loves Thanksgiving because it is “the least politically correct” holiday. Snow said, “I love Thanksgiving. It is the least politically correct of all our holidays. It celebrates the old-fashioned bourgeois family. It praises God, who's creator non grata in most of our public schools, and it bespeaks our national faith in higher truths and greater goods, as well as in our neighbors and ourselves.” [Fox News Sunday, 10/30/98]

2000: Snow Knows of No Examples of Wrongful Execution. Snow said on Fox News that he has “never heard anybody come up with proof of anybody since 1976 who's been executed wrongly.” [Fox News: The Edge with Paula Zahn, 6/21/00]

1995: Snow Said Anti-Smoking Campaign “Federal Nannyism” Tony Snow wrote in a 1995 USA Today column that the government’s anti-smoking effort was “federal nannyism.” [USA Today, 4/14/95]

And now this, from the RNC:

Praise For Tony Snow:

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL): "The President's very lucky to have a man of Tony Snow's caliber take this job on. I think he's going to do an excellent job at maybe one of the toughest press jobs in America. I am sure that he's up to it based on his experience." (Fox News' "Fox News Live," 4/26/06)

Sen. George Allen (R-VA): "I think [Tony Snow is] a great choice. I like Tony a lot. The best thing that Tony's going to do is bring the pulse of the American people into the White House in those deliberations... Great choice by the President. And I think it will be good for the American people, too, to have one of their advocates clearly in the White House who is on the pulse of the people in the real world." (Fox News' "Fox News Live," 4/26/06)

Former Clinton White House Special Counsel Lanny Davis: "[H]e is a man of integrity and he's a man of fairness and he's a man of substance and I emphasize substance because it's my perception that Tony will have a policy role in discussing facts with the President rather than simply being a conduit. ... I think he will have a great deal of credibility on behalf of President Bush." (Fox News' "Fox News Live," 4/26/06)

The Weekly Standard's Bill Kristol: "It will be good to have a fair and balanced press secretary. An outsider with a somewhat happy-go-lucky attitude could help externally, but also internally ..." (Howard Kurtz and Fred Barbash, "Tony Snow Becomes White House Press Secretary," The Washington Post, 4/26/06)

Former White House Aide David Gergen: "Tony Snow is a good man and a good choice." (Fox News' "Fox News Live," 4/26/06)

CNN's Soledad O'Brien: "[Tony Snow] knows how to do TV, and that may be an important plus ..." (CNN's "American Morning," 4/26/06)

Former Texas Democrat Congressman Martin Frost: "[I] think Tony's a straight shooter ... I think Tony obviously has credibility. ... [H]e's somebody that the press respects. ... I think he was a good choice and I think it's good for the President to put somebody out like Tony who has credibility and let's hope that now that things, people can work together in Washington a little bit more." (Fox News' "Fox News Live," 4/26/06)

Republican Strategist Ed Rogers: "He has great familiarity with most of the White House press corps, anyway. Great familiarity with a lot of the people that he will be working with in the White House. So I think he will come in with the wind at his back and have a lot of goodwill both with the public, both with the media, and inside the White House, so I think it's, I think it's great." (Fox News' "Fox News Live," 4/26/06)

NBC's David Gregory: "[Tony Snow] certainly has a good reputation. And yes, look, I think, for people like me in the job that we're doing, somebody like a Tony Snow, who has some sense of what our needs are, where we're coming from, can be very helpful." (MSNBC's "Scarborough Country," 4/25/06)

CNN's Elaine Quijano: "[W]hat this demonstrates, really, is the desire by this administration to reach out very actively to the media." (CNN's "American Morning," 4/26/06)

Democrat Strategist Steve McMahon: "[H]e's a principled, pragmatic conservative ..." (Fox News' "Fox News Live," 4/26/06)

MSNBC's Tucker Carlson: "[F]or what it's worth, [Tony Snow is] a very good guy. ... [c]ongratulations to Tony Snow. He'll be a pleasure to watch. I look forward to it." (MSNBC's "The Situation," 4/25/06)

Ah, more "drive-by assassinating" by the Democrats and the Chicago LIBune. I can't wait for all the looney libs to say, "This proves Fox News is biased to Republicans as the Bush administration hires one of the FNC's big names."
Course, the same libs neglect to note that Tim Russert was a dem operative before joing NBC, George Stephanopolous was a Dem operative before joing ABC, Chris Matthews a Dem operative before joining MSNBC, the Tribune's own David Axelrod is now a high-powered Dem operative and on and on and on and on and. . . . .

Snow job! Judging from his past comments, he’s just another low-grade bigoted Christian supremacist. I guess that makes him quite the Republican. Is this move to instill confidence in the Bush Administration? They only appear more ridiculous each day. Let’s face it sheepole…we get the government we deserve.

Bush should call himself the Divider not the Decider. By placing Tony Snow as the face of the White House only goes to show how extreme Bush wants to split this country. Tony Snow is a pretty boy Joseph Goebbels with a Smiley pin on his lapel. Not to mention the blurring of government/press relations i.e. Fox News, just got more blurry. We'll now have a State run news corporation to feed the masses.

The DSCC and its many minions at the Chicago Tribune predictably refuse to print what Snow has said about the Democrats (and their echo chamber media allies). For the Democrat Party, such one-sidedness is understandable. For a reporter, such a one-sided article is further evidence of reporter bias.

I'm not surprised.

Fox News is the majority stockholder in the Bush Administion, and they didn't like the way things were being run. So, they sent their own executive over to help clean it up.

Happens all the time.

I've been watching Tony Snow deliver the news for years and I find him an intelligent, thoughtful presenter of the news without a pro-forma allegiance to any politician or political party. I am sorry that he will be leaving the nightly cable-waves, but I'm also certain he will provide a loyal voice for the Bush administration.

Why should it surprise anyone that the only person crazy enough to be the mouth piece of this sinking ship is a dillusional Fox "news" man? He will fulfill his role as the spin doctor while the truth will continue to destroy this administration... or the country... which ever comes first.

What ever happened to the Republican Party? Illinois gave the first Republican president, but now the party is overrun with southern christian zealots. The OSRs (Old School Republicans) need to purge the party of the southern whites who joined the party after President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act.

Tony Snow has often pointed out the difference between actually living by conservative values and being a loyal Bush supporter which was a good thing.
Now that he gets a chance to lick the boots of power he's going to be Bush's biggest apologist. I guess the criticisms of Bush were just a way to build ratings and had nothing to do with any values.
Just what I'd expect from someone from FAUX NEWS.

The real question is "What were they thinking when Snow was picked?" Didn't ANYBODY think about looking at what he wrote or said? Whether Snow is good, bad or indifferent, it just opens up the can of worms that will detract attention from the issues. Another stellar performance by the Bush administration.

What a cesspool the comments section to this blog is. John D's comments are typical of the extremist rhetoric many of the commenters on this blog spew.

"I can't wait for all the looney libs to say..." Classic!

There is no civility here. There is no good-faith discussion. Forget for a moment that America is largely made up of people with politics outside of the "conservative" and "liberal" labels, because here everyone must fall into one of the two categories. And lord save you if you happen to be on the opposite side of an issue with one of the extremists that lurk here; you'll be mocked, labelled, accused of irrepairable bias and your ideas summarily dismissed.

Why would someone want to waste their time here?

I love it when the Loopy Looney Liberals prove me correct. Tony Snow is a Nazi!! Tony Snow is a Christian Southern Bigot (even though he is from Ohio).
And, of course, tying Fox News in with the Republicans. It's OK for Dem operatives such as Tim Russert and George Stephanopolous and Chris Matthews and Bill Moyers and James Carville and on and on to work in networks news, or reporters and editors to go work for the Democrats, but not for Republicans or conservative pundits.
Thought that double standard works for the Looney, Looy Left.

It figures Bush would hire a guy from the
Fox(we love George Bush, and all other republicans)Communist News Network!!!

Wow! And the rest of the world continues to watch...FOX News, what a joke!

I always wondered something...when the leftwingers call Fox News "Faux" News... do they pronounce both of them the same way? Probably so.

I think Tony Snow will provide a refreshing change. I'd rather see someone in there that isn't afraid to disagree with the administration than another yes-man.

No, "Bush-is-secretly-a-genius" quotes?

Nothing about The Decider being the guy "who gets to decide?"

And he has called Bush "impotent?"

What does he know that the American public doesn't know? Now, with Bob Dole, EVERYONE knew. He advertised it! Literally...

Just sit back, watch and laugh (as the band plays and the ship sinks).

John D: The Chicago LIBune??? The liberal newspaper that's endorsed Bush twice?

Yeah, Dish. Chicago LIBune. Putting endorsements aside, the paper is loaded with left-wingers such as Mark Silva, Frank James, Jill Zukman, Mary Schmich, Eric Zorn, Charlie Madigan, aznd on and on and on. And while good economic news, for instance, gets relegated to somewhere in the business section, if at all, any bad economic news or created bad economic news by the LIBune always seems to find its way to the front page of the front section.

John D, I'm guessing irony is not a word in your vocabulary. Have you heard the story about the pot and the kettle? You know, where you accuse someone else of doing the very thing you are doing. Like when Bush and Co. call other people liars.

Once Tony gets in the groove, repeating the lies and obfucations of the Bush crew he will realize that he made a really, really bad career move.

Bad news sells more than good news so yes, bad news gets more coverage than good news. We tend to love dirt on our enemies, not nice stories, regardless of our political views.

The 'FAUX' thing was a little wordplay joke and everyone I know whether they are Republican, Democrat, liberal, conservative, hunters or goofy tree huggers knows how to pronounce it.
And you can bet that Tony Snow will knock off any hint at critical commentary of Bush now that he's been bought by him which is a loss in my book. Can you picture him saying 'I'm not with the president on this one but here's what he told me to say'? Hardly. If you stand up for what you believe in then you don't want to become somebody else's mouthpiece. I didn't think Snow was the type of person who would want to be put in a position where he's given a list of what to say, and not to say, I thought he was an independent type but apparently I was wrong. Makes me wonder how often he's done this before.
Frankly I don't think we should have a press secretary. Our politicians should tell us what they mean directly instead of hiring someone to obscure. Look at Tony Blair. He's got to stand up every day and answer direct questions as to what he means which also means he has to think on his feet. I think our president should do the same for a short period before Congress every day.

I have to laugh. Let's all watch Tony Snow, Fox News distorter and W's new press secretary get in front of the press corps and lie and spin to the American people. Anyone with objectivity knows Snow and Fox are unfair and unbalanced. They are mouthpieces for the administration. The truth will come out in the end.

What's most galling to people who did not vote for Bush and who are unhappy with the administration is this entirely plausible idea: Bush and his minions were looking for someone to snow more Americans into finding their right-wing policies appealing. They're looking ahead to the next round of elections and trying to shore up support for the Republican party. And who better to snow the masses into supporting the next group of would-be public servants least concerned with public service (I'm talking about the Republicans, John D) than a guy named Snow? How witty! How very, very witty and amusing.

Rock the vote, loony libs!

And by the way, John D, Charlie Madigan is the least loony voice among public-minded journalists I can think of. His honesty, ethics and resulting validity must be a significant factor in his position as a columnist for the Tribune.

Hey John D.,Quit your crying. It's because of blind faith extremist conservatives like you, that we have the "clown show" that is George W. Bush in office... Twice.

There once was a man named John D,
And liberals he skewered with glee
But just call him out,
And he starts to pout
That frivolous silly John D.

John D., I agree with you that some on the left are wacko. ( plenty on the right as you demonstrate) Tony Snow taught Geography in East Kenya to Kenyans, was an advocate for people with developmental disabilities in North Carolina. So I doubt the guy is a "bigot". He however is, was and always will be a mouth piece for the right. No big suprise. At least the guy will make press briefings watchable. ( McClellan was a moron
)He's gonna have his hands full representing W. and the rest of the crooks in this administration!

What exactly does the White House press secretary do besides say what the White House wants him/her to say?

Snow will do a great job because he comes tv-ready. But I have a feeling he will get bored quickly and only last through next February.

I never cease to be amazed about how polarized a nation we have become. Virtually every comment is either STRONGLY for or STRONGLY against the Tony Snow choice. No one has even remotely suggested that we wait and see how he actually does on the job before we begin to pass judgment on his performance. Maybe he will be a superb press secretary (as all the republicans KNOW he will be), or maybe he will be a terrible one (as all the democrats KNOW he will be), or maybe he will be just be an adequate one. But everyone just has to rush to his defense, or rush to heap criticism on him, before he has had even ONE press conference. Give him some time on the job, and THEN decide on whether he is qualified.

John D.

Let's see: No WMD found? It's the liberal media. Iraq not going well? It's the liberal media. CIA leaks? It's the liberal media. Osama Bin Laden not caught? It's the liberal media. High gas prices? It's the liberal media. What a sorry, pathetic refrain.

If you haven't already, do like I did and delete the Fox News channel from your TV menu. Like everyone says now, it's Bush News anyway, not even Republican, and Snow is just another flea that's jumped off Fox News's hairy, wart-covered back. Now we'll be subjected to Fox (Bush) News on every *^&%$# news station.

Someone got a job. Someone took a paycut to be part of the process of governing. GOD! He must be as crazy as those he works for.... or is it something else entirely?

Does he really does want to remove the 'mouthpiece' from the podium and -- based upon his reporting background -- be part of the process of getting out the truth? I hope so. It's got to be a hard job to say the same thing twenty times in front of a camera while fifty people try to disect the meaning of each word. (I guess that depends upon your defninition of 'it'...)

Sometimes a cigar is a cigar. More people are working. More people are critical of the length of our stay in Iraq. Truths truly are that simple. Somewhere along the way, politicians (and their mouthpieces) unlearned that the truth truly is that simple.

John D. is wetting his freakin' Depends on here. Get a grip and go drink some more koolaid dude.

It's no surprise to anyone that Mister Bush selected another racist. It's the "Republican Way"

How soon we forget that Billy Bob, Al and John Edwards are all southern white boys! It's just plain simple that the power structure of both parties happen to be shifting to the south and its because there are so many people leaving the cesspools of the north.

I'm probably too late for this discussion but I'm wondering if Chris wrote "dillusional" on purpose. If it's just a misspelling, i'm sad, because it's the prefect word to describe the crumbling support for the Bush administration's lies. "Dillusional." That's awesome. I'm totally going to use that.

I'm sick and tired of hearing about the so-called liberal media. When papers start having editorials about banishing all forms of capital punishment or legalizing drugs then you can talk to me about a liberal media. We have a centrist, right media in this country, true liberals who are willing to go out on a limb and talk about the environment or drug legalization are instantly called "crazy"...so to say there is a liberal media is ludicrous. Snow (and Fox) happen to fall on the far right of a generally right media...it's no surprise from an administration that cares little for the truth its subjects..er...citizens.

John D writes, ""drive-by assassinating" by the Democrats and the Chicago LIBune...looney libs...Loopy Looney Liberals...Looney, Looy Left"

You know, that reminds me, whatever happened to good ol' JD? Why haven't we been hearing from him lately? I sure do miss him.

Wait a minute, you don't suppose that JD and John D are.... Nah, couldn't be. I'm sure JD's just on vacation or something.

Sounds like the Liberals here are scared of Tony Snow or they don't haven't else to talk about so they do what they always do, bash the Bush administration. It would be nice if the Liberals actually had something of substance to say.

First, a priceless quote from Sen. Allen (R-VA), a Republican who actually spoke the truth about Tony's Snow job...

"The best thing that Tony's going to do is bring the pulse of the American people into the White House in those deliberations. People like Laura Ingraham and Tony and Hannity and Rush Limbaugh, they understand what's going on in the real world, and I think that's going to be very helpful for the White House as they develop policy to move this country forward....I think it will be good for the American people, too, to have one of their advocates clearly in the White House who's on the pulse of the people in the real world."

Secondly, in response to Siouxperman, liberals actually do have a lot of substance when they talk, but conservatives don't hear it because they're too busy repeating their shill talking points of "9/11", "freedom is on the march", "we're fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them over here", etc., etc., etc...

I heard yesterday that it was Tony Snow who introduced Lucianne Goldberg to Linda Tripp (source: Larry King Live). So now we know how Tony got his job at Fox - set up the number one Fox target, Bill Clinton!!!

And by the way John D. - all those Democratic journalists you quoted - they moved FROM govenment TO the media. Tony Snow is moving FROM the media TO govenment. And if we wanted to play that game, don't forget Pat Buchanan, Ollie North, G. Gordon Liddy, etc. - they were all Republicans who moved from the government to the media.

I think it's perfect that money-power's fascist Despot-In-Chief has appointed a Goebbles-Class Fox News Nazi to the WH podium. Now we know exactly what to expect. Snow will spew maximum distortion and propaganda (emotional triggers to keep the ignorant servile from examining the evidence), hand-wringing acknowledgements of sterile and marginalized criticism, minimal facts, and near-zero truth.

Don't worry Dienne,
I'm still here. Glad to know you've missed me. Just enjoying your banter with John D. from the sidelines. Same old story with the left.

I see Tony Snow is now a racist.

John D......after a while this becomes very entertaining watching these guys throw up all over themselves. Wait till they start quoting forefathers or rewrite basic history. It's unbelievable what they come up with.

I'm confused here...why is there such an outcry about a conservative Republican president appointing another conservative to serve in his administration? I recall the previous liberal Democrat president appointing liberals to his administration. Is this really so unusual?

I think u all need some JD. Jack Daniels on ice. CHILL OUT!!

Kat,

You must be new around here. If you'd been reading this murk, er Swamp for any length of time, you would know we've had plenty of JD.

Dienne,

I see how it is....you miss me when I'm gone, but hate me when I'm back.

Just can't win.

What can I say, JD? Can't live with you, can't live without you. Sad state of affairs.
