DES MOINES, Iowa — Three of the major Democratic presidential candidates Friday sought to counter Republican rivals attending a conservative conference by contending the GOP doesn't control the market on the values of America's electorate.

But Republicans weren't the only target of attacks as Sens. Hillary Clinton and Joseph Biden and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson also each looked to gain a foothold for support at the the Polk County Democrats' fall dinner at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

"As Iowa makes up its mind the last 80 days, I hope this election is not based on who has the most money, who has the biggest or best political pedigree or who is the most glamorous candidate," Richardson said. "It should be based on who can bring this country together, a deeply divided country."

Richardson later acknowledged to reporters that he believed his was an "underdog" candidacy for the Democratic nomination in an election that he said was "about restoring the American dream" by placing a priority on instituting universal health care, shifting energy dependence to solar, wind and biofuels and ending the war in Iraq.

Biden, a Delware senator, took note of the Republican contenders seeking support in Washington at a weekend "values" summit sponsored by the conservative Family Research Council.

"We recognize that unlike our Republican opponents, that political ideology does not define our values, as they claim," Biden said. "Folks, we have to start reasserting and claiming, forthrightly, not only what programs we support but why they represent the values of the American people."

Biden said Republicans should look at a way to find healthcare coverage for millions of uninsured Americans to show where their values lie.

"The next Republican that tells me they have the moral high ground, I'd like them to explain to me how there is one scintilla of morality in 49 million people not having insurance," Biden said.

Clinton, who was more than 90 minutes late to the event, urged Democrats to help return the country to a nation of "new beginnings and exciting possibilities."

"For six and a half years, we've been on a detour, a detour both from our own history and values and a detour away from the kind of future we expect for our children," Clinton said in pushing her plans for expanded health care and education. "So it's time to set goals and then to bring our country together about meeting those goals."

We see the liberals' values at work in far leftist strongholds like San Francisco/Oakland: "Clinics" for drug addicts to get their shots; Banning JROTC in disadvantaged high schools; Banning the Marines from using city streets while authorizing Far Left group protests; Seeking to ban fly-overs by the Blue Angels; Not allowing returning GIs from Iraq to deplane to meet their families; Halting military recruiting on college campuses. So far they've left the "San" in San Francisco (St. Francis) but just wait a while.

"Value" voters. Are they the ones who spew hate towards gays in the name of Christ? May I remind you of the bumper sticker..
The Rightious Right are neither.

"So it's time to set goals and then to bring our country together about meeting those goals."

You go girl!!!

When Sen. Biden uses the words "folks" and "values" in the same sentence it seems to me to be a sign of desperation.

But I was impressed when he said "scintilla".

Hilary Clinton will win the Democratic nomination. Hilary Clinton has no morals, ethics or values. She was an enabler to Bill Clinton's raping and molesting women in Arkansas and DC. Rather than being a spokesperson for Women's Rights, she looked away and lied to all of us that it was a right wing conspiracy. She is rumored to have snuck more women into the white house than Bill Clinton did.
Clark, Harry Reid, Palouzi,Kenedy, Leahy, etc. The Republicans do not have a monoply on values but the democrats have no values

Raphael brings up a good point. Eric Rudolph the clinic bomber and the religious hate group that shows up at troop funerals, then represent what the right represents.

Art is right. The Democrats have no values. They have the sacrament of abortion and in their own anti-capitalistic way worship mother earth. Their love of the environment is an attempt to tax businesses out of business. Then, they will say there are no jobs.
Joe Biden is wrong insuring $49 million Americans is not a moral issue. Government can't keep giving health care or anything else away. There is no free lunch.
It's amazing to me that liberal Democrats can only spend tax money not their own.During the Clinton years, Al Gore and Tipper only gave $375 to charity one year.
These people are big on show but, they don't walk the walk. They want strict rules and exempt themselves.
Mistakenly, they believe we can't be trusted with are own money we need to have a share society Hillary says. Yea right she keep grabbing hers we will be paying the shares with tax dollars. Nancy Pelosi is working on a 1 trillion dollar tax increase with Charles Rangel's devious plans to take big gobs of it. The Americans for Tax Reform say an Illinois family will pay $3800 more from this increase and that doesn't Blagos little fees that are really taxes. Jerry White, Springfield, IL

Of course Liberals and Democrats have values!

And in their issue stands, Liberals make value judgments based on their moral compass.

For example, accepting megabucks illegal campaign contributions from shady financiers like Norm Hsu reflects a value judgment.

The censorship practiced daily in US newspapers reflects a value judgment.

Granting preferences based on race reflects a value judgment.

Wanting to take money earned by X, to give to Y, reflects a value judgment.

All these political positions are based on value judgments. All these political positions are based on moral judgments.

Just not very good values, not very good morals.

A Day in the Life of a Terry:

Terry gets up at 6:00 AM to prepare his morning coffee. He fills his pot with good, clean drinking water because some liberal fought for minimum water quality standards. He takes his daily medication with his first swallow of coffee. His medications are safe to take because some liberal fought to ensure their safety and that they work as advertised.

All but $10.00 of his medications are paid for by his employer's medical plan. Because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance, now Joe gets it, too. He prepares his morning breakfast -- bacon and eggs this day. Terry’s bacon is safe to eat because some liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat-packing industry.

Terry takes his morning shower, reaching for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with every ingredient and the amount that is contains because some liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and the breakdown of its contents.

Terry dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some tree-hugging liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air. He walks to the El station for his government-subsidized ride to work; it saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees. You see, some liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.

Terry begins his work day; he has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Terry's employer meets these standards because Terry's employer doesn't want his employees to call the union. If Terry is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed he'll get worker's compensation or an unemployment check because some liberal didn't think he should lose his home to temporary misfortune.

It's noon time. Terry needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Terry's deposit is federally insured by the FDIC because some liberal wanted to protect Terry's money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Depression. Terry has to pay his Fannie Mae underwritten mortgage and his below market federal student loan because some stupid liberal decided that Terry and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime.

Terry is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive to dads; his car is among the safest in the world because some liberal fought for car safety standards. He arrives at his boyhood home. He was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans. The house didn't have electric until some big government liberal stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification (those rural Republicans would still be sitting in the dark).

Terry is happy to see his dad, who is now retired. Terry's dad lives on Social Security and his union pension because some liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Terry wouldn't have to. After his visit with dad, Terry gets back in his car for the ride home. He turns on a radio talk show. The host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn't tell Terry that his beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Terry enjoys throughout his day. Terry agrees, "We don't need those big government liberals ruining our lives. After all, I'm a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have."

In the years to come, Terry's life will change dramatically. The U.S. dollar will be devalued as a result of our huge deficit, our living standards demolished, our standing with the world diminished and our social security gone...all because some conservative Republican made sure he could take care of himself and his buddies.

as an ex-GOPer, I can say that the "values" that delude or cause fear in the base are not only shams but pretty hurtful to the nation as a whole.

whether it's healthcare, religious freedom, responsible spending, individual freedoms (patriot act), and so on, the GOP is a disgrace.

Raphael and Art are hysterical, not to mention perpetual idiot Jerry White. When you guys can't defend yourselves you simply start making up lies... in this case, BIG LIES. You want to defend the most corrupt administration in history and talk about "Values"? You're still mouth watering to give georgie boy the same thing Monica gave Bill. Values from you trash? Give me a break.

You mean like
- Mark Foley (pedophile)
- Larry Craig (gay hypocrite)
- David Vitter (adulterer)
- Dennis Hastert (adulterer)
- Newt Gingrich (adulterer)
- Ted Haggard (hypocrite)
- Jeff Gannon (gay escort)

???

Jerry White, and the rest of you should first explain
when those unborn babies are born why 1) the GOP votes against health care for underprivileged children -- as if they should be punished for their parents missteps; 2) don't care if they are schooled; 3) basically just want them to be born into this sick world we have fashioned, as though it's a great place where they can expect love, education, etc. All this claim to loving someone who has yet to be born, when you consider they generally don't address the needs of the children who are already born and are suffering is the height of hypocrisy. I should think the living would have the monopoly over those yet to be born. But then, this is the far right's CHRISTIAN ideology -- across the board!
