Not exactly a sign of confidence.
The campaign of Sen. Hillary Clinton announced today that Patti Solis Doyle was out as campaign manager.
A Chicagoan and long-time Clinton loyalist, Solis Doyle will be reassigned to a new position in the campaign.
She will reportedly be replaced by Maggie Williams, who served as a top aide to Clinton when she was First Lady and was said to have been a critical adviser to both Hillary and Bill Clinton during the impeachment battle.
The moves comes as Clinton announced that she had loaned her campaign $5 million to help fund contests in February, a sure sign of a struggle for much-needed campaign dollars. Camp Clinton announced just today that it had collected $10 million in contributions since Super Tuesday, in a bid to present a show of strength. Then came news of the manager's departure.

The shakeup comes as the race between Clinton and Obama has become a delegate-for-delegate struggle, with the two almost exactly tied after more than 25 primaries and caucuses so far.
Patti Solis Doyle had been living on borrowed time as Clinton's campaign manager following the disastrous showing in Iowa and the rockiness leading up to the New Hampshire primary.
"What happened today would have happened the day after New Hampshire had we lost," one source said, adding that others may soon follow Solis Doyle's departure.
Initially, Clinton's former White House chief of staff, Maggie Williams, was brought in to run the campaign even though Solis Doyle was still there. The result was confusion and awkwardness for the staff, who weren't sure who was really in charge.
But even more problematic was the campaign's money crunch. Over the last seven years, Clinton had raised $175 million for her reelection and her presidential campaign. But Solis Doyle didn't tell Clinton that there was next to no cash on hand until after the New Hampshire primary.
"We were lying about money," a source said. "The cash on hand was nothing."
In turn, Clinton didn't tell Solis Doyle that she was lending her own money to keep the campaign afloat. Solis Doyle found out third-hand. And when she asked Clinton about it, the senator told her she couldn't understand how the campaign had gotten to such a point.
Her brother, Chicago Alderman Danny Solis, said: "Patti did her job. The goal is to have Hillary as president of the United States. If (Patti) as senior advisor is the best thing for the campaign, then it's fine ... Maggie and Patti are very good friends. It's time for Patti to pass the baton. It's probably a good move on their part ... My mother spoke to my sister yesterday. Patti was in very good spirits."
Following are the statements issued today by Sen. Clinton and Solis Doyle:
Statement from Hillary Clinton:
Patti Solis Doyle has done an extraordinary job in getting us to this point - within reach of the nomination - and I am enormously grateful for her friendship and her outstanding work. And, as Patti has said, this already has been the longest presidential campaign in history and one that has required enormous sacrifices of everyone and our families. I look forward to her continued advice in the months ahead. Patti and I have worked with Maggie Williams for more than a decade. I am lucky to have Maggie on board and I know she will lead our campaign with great skill towards the nomination.

Patti Solis Doyle sent the note below to campaign staff this afternoon:
Over a year ago Hillary launched her campaign for President.
Her announcement began a historic effort that has inspired millions and brought hundreds of thousands to their feet all across this nation.
I have been proud to manage this campaign, and prouder still to call Hillary my friend for more than sixteen years. I know that she will make a great President.
This has already been the longest Presidential campaign in the history of our nation, and one that has required enormous sacrifices from all of us and our families.
During the last month I have been working closely with my longtime friend, Maggie Williams.
This week Maggie will begin to assume the duties of campaign manager. I will serve as a senior adviser to Hillary and the campaign and travel with Hillary from time to time on the road. Maggie is a remarkable person and I am confident that she will do a fabulous job.
Although I will continue to see you all at headquarters, I would be remiss if I didn’t thank each of you for your dedication, excellence, and passion over the last year.
You are the best campaign staff in the history of Presidential politics and I am grateful to each of you for your hard work and friendship.

Fifteen paragraphs by Mr. Tackett when one word would have sufficed: "FIRED!"

Well, they can't fire Bill. Heck, Hillary couldn't fire Bill when he messed up their marriage by playing with interns, let alone fire him for messing up her campaign by playing the race card.

Now, Bill should be next, he has really hurt the efforts of Hillary. I lost respect for him during the last 2 months and think he has done her lots of harm. He needs to use some of his brains and think before he speaks, esp. being a former President.

Continuing that fine course of 35 years of 'Change' that she began to tout after Obama, Clinton finds her voice yet again. This is looking great for the Republicans

No matter how she is packaged, handled, marketed, or positioned, too many people cannot stand Hillary Clinton; I give Patti Solis Doyle credit for getting Hillary this far. If Hillary was a good, or even viable option to lead the country, this would not have happened.
For goodness sake people, let's get over this sick and destructive addiction to Bush-Clinton politics and move forward!

This is a sure sign she is SCARED and her coronation is NOT going as well as the plan she laid out!
Nonetheless, it's a SMART move for traction.

This is HUGE. Things aren't going well for the Clinton Camp. Right now, with 44% in, Obama is leading in Maine 57/42. If Obama can hold this state and Virginia on Tuesday (Clinton's two best chances for wins before March 4), then he would gain some serious momentum as the race shifts to what ordinarily should be Clinton territory.

So if Hillary can't be President, at least she can be a lame duck. Looks like the Dems will nominate a nice hood ornament this time around.

In the last week:
1) Clinton had to put in $5m into her campaign AND her staff has gone without pay for a month.
2)She looses all three of the Saturday primaries.
3) The loss-firing- of her campaign manager.
This should be a wake up call for the states that have not had their primaries yet. If she can't hold her campaign together, what makes her able to keep our country together?

Hillary Clinton campaign is crumbling around her and she is buying time but my concern is that the issue with her having a majority of the Hispanic votes in the press. Across the country where there is large Mexican American population that are registered to vote there is a concern on how many of these voter’s are legal or illegal residents. The fact is there are over 12 million illegal Hispanic immigrants that have assumed fake identities that are registered voters. If we as a nation cannot control the tide of illegal immigrants from working here and obtaining fake documents how can we know if her votes are, genuine, The Hispanic communities as a whole will support any candidate that is about giving their people amnesty for citizenship in exchange for their vote. Why are the candidates or the press address not addressing this issue when it comes to immigration reform?

Hillary's campaign has been a series of blunders. She underestimated her opposition. She started by wanting to chat. Query: why does a person ready to be president on day one need to chat? She has been unable to keep her husband under control. She has needlessly alienated African-Americans. She has watched as her campaign ran out of money and had to loan some herself. Now she cans her campaign manager with some lame spin that nobody believes for even one second. Ready to be president on day one? Now there's a fairy tale.

I don't think her staff went without pay for a month. Possibly for a few days, if that. That was a ploy: We're broke; donate money!

LOL.
To the 64% of Latinos who voted for Hillary in CA, AZ and NV - WAKE UP!
Hillary starts to lose and the first person she throws off the bus is 1. A woman 2. A minority 3. A Latina.
DOH!
Sorry. No refunds on those votes.
Tejanos, take note.

rocky - I've wondered (and worried) about the same issue - are we having millions of illegal immigrants (w driver's licenses & other forms of ID) voting in the border states? when are we going to get biometric ID cards like many other developed countries? why should this be a concern in the United States of America? can we have our next presidential election decided by massive illegal votes?
p.s. - Clinton, like Bush, seems to value loyalty above experience & competence - I hear that she fires anyone having a good word to say about Obama. Haven't we had 8 years of that kind of paranoia?
Posted by: Jean | February 10, 2008 8:42 PM
Rocky. What makes you think that 12 million illegal immigrants all have fake voter ID's and are willing to go to the polls and vote.
The fact is Latinos do not vote in big percentages like the African American voters. Most latinos are hard working, law abiding folks that are looking to create an opportunity for themselves and their families. A border will not stop the more than 40% of illegal immigrants that are not of mexican decent.
All that said I am enjoying this tight Democratic race.
Go Obama!

Hillary, Don't blame your decline on your campaign manager, blame it on George Bush. Up to now you have blamed him for everthing else.

HRC is most responsible for her collapsing campaign based on how she ran it.
However, the two other people most responsible for the collapse are Mark Penn and Bill Clinton.
But she dare not fire them.
Posted by: Dave from queens | February 10, 2008 10:10 PM
Wow! The AAs in her opinion is threatening her win, so she hires Williams. She's not concerned about the Latino vote anymore because she assumes she has conquered that. So what's next? The youth vote? Who will they hire to co-manage between the age of 18-30?
Maybe difficult----but the Clintons will find a way to pit one group against another.
Posted by: James | February 10, 2008 10:13 PM
Wait a minute...let me get this straight -- according to this article, the person that Hillary Clinton put in charge of her campaign, Patti Solis, did not tell Clinton that there was no money left after New Hampshire? They were "lying about money"??? And then Clinton doesn't even tell Solis that she gave the campaign money...Solis finds out third hand?
Are you kidding me?
Is this the way we want our government to be run? Lies and mismanagement?
Posted by: Betty | February 10, 2008 10:20 PM
This is not about the Latino vote...no one knows or cares about Patricia Doyle...she is not a Hispanic leader...she was a staffer and she is now merely a symbol of a campaign in deep trouble. She should have been fired after Iowa...Now can someone fire Bill?
Posted by: MSanchez | February 10, 2008 10:34 PM
Now that Hillary got a good chunk of the Hispanic vote in California, she can fire her Latina campaign manager and hire a black woman to replace her as she loses the black vote caucus by caucus, primary by primary.
As much as I'm trying to give Hillary the benefit of the doubt on everything and try to forget who she's married to, everything she does has an air of calculation about it. Just like Slick Willie.

Remeber when Obama gave that sermon/speech about the walls of Jerihco? Well.....it looks like the walls are crumbling down! The HRC campaign walls that is!

"We were LYING about money," a source said. "The cash on hand was nothing."
LYING ABOUT THE MONEY, well, that's a bad thing and NOT the kinda thing that is bound to endear you to the folks who are 'counting' on an accurate ongoing accounting so...
Maybe this is a good thing for everyone involved, including the Dems and the US! We ARE looking to REMOVE A LIAR and his enablers after all, would it not be best we didn't replace them with yet another set of LIARS!?

Maggie Williams is yet another moldie oldie form the Clinton I White House days. And tainted with scandal, as most Clinton staffers were and are.
See the March 17, 1997, Time Magazine, about the Johnny Chung scandal and Williams:
"Sometimes,” President Bill Clinton mused on Friday afternoon, “there is a difference between what is legal and what ought to be done.” And with that he offered a guided tour of Washington’s favorite hideaway–the fertile, foggy valley that lies somewhere between what is wrong and what is illegal. You don’t have to be a lawyer to get in, but it helps to think like one.
Hillary Clinton’s top aide, Maggie Williams, was spending the day there in March 1995, when California businessman Johnny Chung walked into her White House office one morning and handed her a check for $50,000. It was just “a rather unusual circumstance,” Clinton explained last week. She didn’t actually ask Chung for the money as the price of admission to sit in on the President’s radio address two days later. She wasn’t “receiving” contributions on federal property; she was just passing them along. And she certainly didn’t “solicit” them, which federal law forbids.
Or does it? Or did she? Chung’s lawyer, Brian Sun, told TIME that Chung had approached Williams’ aide Evan Ryan the day before, hoping to arrange a cozy lunch in the White House mess for some Chinese businessmen and a later meeting with the First Lady. Somehow the subject turned to Democratic Party needs. Ryan remarked that the President’s party had to cover the costs of political events held by the First Lady at the White House, although Ryan “does not recall” that conversation. So Chung came back the next day and handed Williams that “unsolicited” $50,000 check for the Democratic National Committee. According to Sun, Chung did so with the understanding that it would help him gain access for his guests, who indeed dined in the mess and had their pictures taken with Hillary the next day."

As Obama and McCain continue to win primaries the “inevitable” Ms Clinton should look to her husband as a primary cause of her electoral embarrassment. Whatever her real or supposed weaknesses they pale in comparison to those of Bill. Thus far the campaign does not appear ready to succeed on day one or any other day and the "First Husband" is not helping. Hillary is by no means the worst candidate in this or any other presidential year however her husband has become a weight even Atlas could not bear. If change is the mantra of this electoral season then perhaps she should ex-change Bill for someone showing the temperment, moderation and judgement of a McCain or Obama.

We already had one calculating Clinton with dubious ethics in the White House. We certainly don't need another. (Oops -I forgot - she WAS there!)
I wonder what the definition of "broke" is?

It is unwise to count a Clinton out. As someone that has been against Clinton from the beginning, I have seen them turn defeat into victory more times than I can remember.
Their methods are not always moral, but they are very effective and always are efficient adversaries. Yes this looks bad for them, but I wouldn't put it past them to have put this out now, in order to craft the image that they are losing so they can make a huge come back. It is exactly what occurred when they happened to mention they are out of money. They haven't been out of money, it was a ploy to get sympathy and generate new donors. The act was the staffers volunteering to go without pay, which they never needed to do as money turns out to have popped up out of no where and they are reports that on the money front Clinton is fine.
I also would not put it past them to make sure that they win through back room dealings. This is NOT over. Obama is the best hope for change in D.C., but until he has the 2100+ delegates (more just to be safe) needed, Clinton is always a threat. She always has the upper hand, if only because she refuses to play by anyones rules but her own.
Clinton was the establishment candidate from the beginning. She still is that candidate and still is the favorite candidate to pull down the nomination from the Democrats.

I didn't see Obama reaching out to the Latino Community. The Clinton's always had them.
Thank you Patti Solis, you did a fantastic job. One for being Latina, second for being a woman.

I am not voting the Hill. The only real change in DC would have been with John Edwards. However the media and the bloggers thought the Democatic candidate should have been base on a gender and race war. It makes good copy. It does't help a starving child. I have worked on all kinds of campaigns. This year is making me sick. We had other much better candidates with well laid out platfroms and the media and the bloggers decided the it would be more fun to watch Clinton and Obama bicker.
