Bill Richardson endorsing Barack Obama today: The Swamp

by Andrew Malcolm

After weeks of personal pondering and not a little anguish, New Mexico's Gov. Bill Richardson has decided to endorse Sen. Barack Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination.

The official endorsement will come later today in Portland, Oregon, according to the Associated Press.

Bill%20Richardson.jpg

Richardson, who ran against both of the surviving Democratic candidates, Obama and New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, is the nation's only Hispanic governor. He gave up his own run for the White House on Jan. 9 after never really gaining much traction -- he garnered barely 2 percent of the caucus votes in Iowa -- amid suspicions he was really auditioning as a possible vice presidential nominee for the party's eventual winner.

That suspicion might still be there. Richardson and the less-experienced Obama could make a good fit since such a combo brings a Latino link to the nation's fastest-growing population sector, a managerial link both as a Cabinet secretary and a state chief executive, diplomatic experience as a troubleshooter and U.N. ambassador and, especially, someone not recently connected to Washington and from the once-staunchly Republican Rocky Mountain corridor.

(Read on, and see the great story that appeared here earlier about the day that Obama bailed out Richardson in a Democratic debate.)

After a series of initial stumbles Richardson did show some flash during a summer debate in Des Moines when he referred to both Clinton and Obama. "You know," he said with a smile, "I think that Sen. Obama does represent change. Sen. Clinton has experience. Change and experience: With me, you get both."

Had it come earlier, the governor's endorsement could have helped Obama stem Clinton's victories in Texas and California, where she showed real strength in Latino communities. In fact, she won the Democratic primary in Richardson's home state with a two-to-one majority among Hispanics.

Richardson, who is a Democratic superdelegate, gave a subtle hint to his choice 10 days ago, as reported in The Ticket. At a UCLA forum he was asked which Democratic candidate could best handle today's challenges.

"I'm truly conflicted," Richardson said. "I'm torn. I see ... a lot of loyalty I owe President Clinton. He made me U.N. ambassador. He made me Secretary of Energy. He's treated me extremely well. But you know what? I paid him back. Because I served well." Richardson described the former first lady as "enormously capable ... but I did run against her."

He also ran against Obama, of course. But in a prepared statement he'll release today, Richardson will say: ""I believe he is the kind of once-in-a-lifetime leader that can bring our nation together and restore America's moral leadership in the world," AP reported.

Richardson will also say, "There is no doubt in my mind that Barack Obama has the judgment and courage we need in a commander in chief when our nation's security is on the line."

Campaign sources indicate Obama hopes to roll out a series of such endorsements and announcements during the long run-up to the Pennsylvania primary April 22 to create a sense of momentum. There's still former Sen. John Edwards out there and, of course, former senator, former vice president and former presidential candidate Al Gore, who's not always had the closest relationship with his ex-boss's wife.

Although the Illinois senator leads in the popular vote total and in delegates, more recent opinion polls seem to indicate a shift toward Clinton since Obama's twin losses in the major states of Ohio and Texas and last week's furor over his pastor's anti-white and anti-American sermons.

Thank God !!!

A rational, intelligent super-delegate makes the right decision.

All those who wanted to see substance from Obama - please view his speech on racism.

Now Hillary needs to exit. She will not have the votes. She is destroying the party for her own purposes. She is not about change since her tactics are right out of Bill's book.

Sadly Bill Richardson sells out latinos!!!OBAMA LOOSES JOBS FOR MINORITIES
Ms. Obama, VP Chicago Hosp, that charges minorities 6 times as much, isn’t cold hearted enough; she also caused hundreds to loose their 11.hr jobs, to be more efficient she said! In 05, elected to the BOD Westchester-based TreeHouse Foods, she received $12,000 and $33,000 from a subsidiaries, in Nov announced closing its La Junta, plant, that claimed the jobs of 153 workers, most of them Hispanic! Huge blow to a rural town jobs paid a starting wage of $11hr, Company pays top execs like MICHELLE OBAMA tens of millions a year while destroying middle-class America. Raises the question not only about corporate values but about Barrack Obama's own values. Specifically, while he bashes Wal-Mart, why does his wife, make $45,000 and up a year serving on the board of Chicago comp that pays her a very hefty amount of money while laying off mostly minority workers in economically deprived areas? No. 1 customer is Wal-Mart???
Obamas attack on middle class and minorities- The Crowns and employees of their family-run holding company have given at least $195,000 to Obama's presidential campaign. Maytag shut the Galesburg plant after Labor Day 2004 Union member say senator did little to save jobs in the blue-collar town of 37,000. Obama connection to Maytag: Lester Crown, company's director’s records show, has raised tens of thousands of dollars for Obama's campaigns. Maytag shut the Galesburg plant after Labor Day 2004.

Black voters are choosing black candidate based on skin color not merit and not what he can do to help our failing country. What a serious shame...we are giving away another election. Thank the media! Obamas speeches address just black voters. The same person who claims he is not running on race? It sure isn’t experience or who is best to run this country. Don’t believe it will work in the general election He truly had divided voters since SC win. No one is so naive as not to think that black resentment towards whites could render Senator Obama unelectable. NOW IT’S TIME FOR THE MEDIA TO SCRUTINIZE OBAMA LIKE THEY HAVE DONE TO EVERYOTHER NON-BLACK CANDIDATE. MEDIA HAS FAILED AMERICAN VOTERS

How much did the racist Obama pay Richardson????

Last time I looked I lived in
America where anyone could run for president. Where do you live? Why should she only care about the party?

In regards to Mr. Malcolm's last sentence of his article: My understanding is that Obama won Texas, just do the delegate math please. When will you guys get this straight?

Wonder how Latino voters will feel about this. They have supported Clinton throughout the primaries and continue to be loyal to her. I also wonder how the press will treat this. While many Obama supporters and media saw Obama's refusal to distance himself from his inflammatory minister as admirable, they will probably not even mention the way Richardson is abandoning his long-standing relationship with the Clintons. And for what? Obama is unelectable in the General.

How anyone could back this racist is beyond me. Of course, Bill Richardson is not a TYPICAL WHITE PERSON.

No he is a guy that supports illegal aliens. Richardson would not be a Governor in a State without large numbers of Hispanics.

Obama should resign. Everytime he talks now he puts down White Voters.

We see Obamas heart, he will destroy his Grandmother to get elected.

Obama = RACISM.

Get out obama = Are you for real?!?

First you try to paint whatever Obama's wife does as if Obama did it himself. Do you take the blame for everything your spouse does? Does Eliot Spitzer's wife?

Second, you point the finger at WalMart, claiming Michele Obama's company is the number one customer of WalMart. How about Hillary BEING ON THE BOARD OF WALMART?!? Did you conveniently forget that?

OBama has done more for Latinos by passing the All Kids health program in Illinois than anything Hillary has done for LAtinos. All the Clintons do is pimp out Latinos.

Please - wise up. Do some serious analysis and reading about Obama's policies and stances instead of this knee-jerk reaction. Hillary is ruining the Democratic party and will ruin the country if she gets in. Her winner-take-all, me-first attitude is the last thing our stuggling nation needs right now.

I am EXTREMELY disappointed in Richardson. How can anyone endorse OBAMA with his limited experience and no chance against McCain? Senator Obama must be making his Cabinet list to get all these endorsements. It is NOT based upon merit. He is a great orator, so was Reagan, but Reaganomics was a disaster for the US. Let's get off the dazzling popularity contest and vote someone with a real chance to change America with hard work NOT dreams. Why did Obama turn his Rev Wright controversy into a race issue? I was insulted by the Anti American message that full circles Obama's "not wearing a flag lapel" and Michelle's proud of my country comment. WHY does Obama still have NO papers to show for being in the Illinois legislature, but Hillary was not transparent to get THOUSANDS of pages released? Why is EVERYONE covering for this man? Oh yeah, they voted for Bush a second time around. Enough said, the American public is so dumb their chickens have come home to roost and they deserve this war and economy.

Here's the scenario: An African American of mixed heritage and an Hispanic of mixed heritage for the Democrats, and two caucasian males for the Republicans. The democrats get the Black/Hispanic/youth/progressive vote. The Republican vote consists of White rust belt blue collar workers who are perennially screwed over by Republican, Southern Whites who are perennially screwed over by Republicans, the evangelicals who are perennially screwed over by the Republicans, and South Florida Cuban exiles.

American voters choose Obama/Richardson because they don't want a mean war monger who dreams of following people to the gates of hell.

In regards to "Michigan VOTER" Mr. Obama did not win Texas. She got the popular vote %. All of the caucas delegates are not known yet. May not be until the state convention. County conventions are March 29th. Mr. Obama only dominated Harris, Dallas, Tarrant counties...the Metro areas with high % of black voters. It was close in San Antonio/Austin areas. Ms. Clinton took most rural areas all of the West and South and Northeast TEXAS areas.

Endorsements are about as useless as an electronic border fences. Both sound great but don't change a thing in the end.

Reiterating the post above - Mr. Malcolm and the rest of the corporate owned media seem to keep getting it wrong. Obama won Texas. This contest is won by delegates and he won more of them in Texas.

If "journalists" like Mr. Malcolm are given the power to pen articles, then they should be held accountable to get their basic facts right.

Talk about the blind leading the blind. Obama continues not to explain why he suffered such poor judgment with Rev. Wright and Rezko, and now Bil Richardson, who loves diplomacy so much that he feels that Musharaff would step down as quasi- dictator president of Pakistan if we asked him nicely and by saying "please." That would be one scary ticket if Bill was the VP.

This still won't help Obama. The damage to his campaign has already been done. What a waste of an endorsement!

"Wonder how Latino voters will feel about this."

Who cares.

The problem with America is that everyone is looking out for themselves and not the country.

I realize that's how 'the real world' works, but so long as we keep thinking about "whites, blacks, asians and latinos" as separate entities, we will continue to spiral. We're better than that, otherwise we'd be the Balkans or Iraq. We're not. We're the UNITED States of America.

Jerry, I want to thank you for speaking from your RACIST HEART. I like that you are sincerely RACIST.

Obama 08

Resign? First you have to be hired to resign. Obama wouldn't destroy his Grandmother. Keep taking stuff out of context and spouting lies. At least Obama has the guts to confront problems head on and frankly. Unlike a certain president I know during a certain scandal where our security was threatened with the leak of a certain CIA operatives name... Did anybody in the White House get fired like he said he would when the story first broke??? Of course not.

"Richardson would not be a Governor in a State without large numbers of Hispanics. "

Jerry, don't Hispanic voters count just as much as everyone else?

Jerry=idiot

Senator Richardson does NOT speak for or represent the well informed Latino voters of all ages and educational levels. We can see through the rhetoric of Obama's speeches. Latinos know that Senator Clinton has the knowledge, experience but most IMPORTANTLY substance to her speeches with actual SOLUTIONS.

Hey Lochnessmonster:

Anyone can run. But Hillary runs under a party flag. She has destroyed the party.

Hillary Hands Presidency to McCain.
(you are aware they are goods friends, right?)

Many Democratic Senators, Congressional Reps, and former Clinton Administration people, like Richardson, are supporting Obama. My question is what did Hillary do to turn so many people off? Was she hard to work with in the Senate and at the White House? Or are some Democratics who backed Bill Clinton and Hillary through the numerous scandals and the impeachment trial just fed up with the Clintons? As an independent voter watching these events of the Democratic campaign unfold I find it very interesting.

All are welcome to the "Approval Style Voting for the Democratic Cabinet" site: http://puredem.wordpress.com. No-nonsense speculation.

We all can ask ourselves do we really want another 4 years of the same politics of Division: Poor Vs Rich, Black Vs White, Illegal Vs Legal Immigration, Against the Death Penalty Vs. For the Death Penalty, For Tax Cuts Vs Against Tax Cut, For School Vouchers Vs Against School Vouchers, For Gun Control Vs Against Gun Control. None of these legitimate issues matter as long we stay in Iraq, while China builds a massive Army, for what end? To take over Taiwan —Really. Russia backs the Serb against Kosovo independence, for what purpose? To promote unity in the Balkans—Really.

Sunnis are growing effective in fighting Al Qaeda forces. Shiites are increasingly effective in blowing up American Tanks. This is slowly becoming a proxy war ---Ask yourself who would benefit the most if America stays in Iraq? The Iraqis—No, The so-called Arabs----No, Israel---No, American “Strategic Interest---No. As long we continue to spend 12 Billion dollars a month fighting this war, we will only weaken the American’s Treasury. Money that could have been invested At Home for healthcare, education, infrastructure, retooling the Armed Forces to deter an adventures Russia or China is being spent in a war that we surely have nothing to gain from winning it.

Iraq will not join the fold of Democratic Nations by us deploying more troops and by dropping more smart bombs. We can continue on this road for 100 years, the result would be same as it is today…Case in point, Israel and Palestinian conflict or the Hundred Years’ War from 1337 to 1453 between France and England. We cannot afford to stay this course for another 4 years. Russia and China will be the true benefactors of our pro-longed engagement in Iraq.

We can begin to form that more Perfect Union by selecting the person We Trust the Most to end the war and begin to invest At Home. All patriotic Americans ought to be against a war that stands to destroy this great Nation if it is not ended soon.

I am a Patriotic, Republican, Veteran and Legal Immigrant who happened to be a post civil right generation man.

----Oh yes, Black Man.

Bill Richardson, a friend of the Clintons who served in both Clinton’s Administration with an impressive credentials made his decision out of his Patriotic Duty…It is now up to us to do the same without regards to the politics of the past division, but for our genuine concern for the future of this Great Nation.

Too little too late. This is backroom, political deal cutting, nothing more.

Fact is, if Richardson was really a strong Obama supporter he would have come out before Texas, California, Ohio, etc.

This won't take the focus off of the reality that Obama is a racist con man.

I thought Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga) said he switched his superdelegate vote from Clinton to Obama because it expressed the sentiment of his district. Using that logic, shouldn't Richardson (and Kennedy and Kerry, for that matter) have endorsed Hillary because she carried their states?

Richardson is a disingenous opportunist. The Obama campaign held off announcing this endorsement to cover for a pathetic week they've been having. Afraid to tell this to his supporters, but Obama will certainly lose in November if he is nominated.

I don't recall ever seeing the Black Panther Party publicly endorsing a presidential candidate as the organization did this week for Obama.

Why would The Black Panther's (and Louis Farrakhan's) first public presidential endorsement be for Obama? Is it his policy on Iran? The war? The economy?

LOL

Or is it perhaps that they reconize Obama as a fellow Black Nationalist from the Jeremiah Wright farm team?

Now we know what Obama means by "change."

“We completely support Obama as the best candidate is the best guy to bring the kinds of racial changes supported by our community at the New Black Panthers," said Malik Zulu Sharazzi, who has led the New Black Panther Party (NBPP) since 2001.

I'm amused that some of those commenting here seem to enjoy using big campaign buzz words, like "vetted" and "disingenuous." Unfortunately, they need to learn how to spell them as well as take the time to look them up in a dictionary.

Richardson another coward. I am latino and he does not speak for all of us.

Regret sending Richardson a contribution since he can't see thru Obama's act. And I thought Richardson's experience made him the best candidate. He quit so I voted for Hillary. You go girl! If people think there are problems with race in this country, the gender issue is an even bigger problem. Too bad the statistical majority, women, don't get that they would be better served by letting a woman drive the political bus for awhile.

I'm sorry to inform all those misinformed, including Journalists, but Clinton did not win Texas.

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=87961802

Just wondering did Obama backers recently send contributions to Richardson to help pay down his campaign debt? I hope some politcal computer researcher checks this out.

Bill Richardson endorses Obama - This is a really big deal ????? Not really - after Clinton spent the day in Indiana with IN Senator Even Bayh (D) - probably told Richardson his shot at VP with Clinton is -0-

This from the e-mail message sent to Richardson supporters in the wee hours: “The 1990’s were a decade of peace and prosperity because of the competent and enlightened leadership of the Clinton administration, but it is now time for a new generation of leadership to lead America forward.” ????????? Is this the best he can say ?

Changing the guard from incompetent to immature is the only CHANGE Obama will make.
Peace and Prosperity can only be resurrected by Hillary Clinton’s SOLUTIONS.

Congrat's to Oboma it's truly said that the last comment was filled with so much hatred,i am not sure if you hate Oboma or Blacks??? maybe you should look in the moirror when calling others out.. I am a white woman 100% and I enjoy the thought of having something different in the white house and we should not let our own personal views on people of color ie.. white, black, asian, latina make the differance on who we support.. god help you.. and glod bless america and obama

This is a great endorsement from a highly regarded former member of Bill Clinton's cabinet and an influential superdelegate as well. Congratulations Barack!

I'm a hispanic and my vote hasn't changed. Hillary all the way! Bill Richardson? You should have kept your mother's last name - Lopez and maybe you could have more impact with the hispanic vote. Te debo llamar La Malinche!

I've come to realize that country has improved somewhat with race relations. Yet the true and hardest work hasn't occurred. It's time, it's time that all americans take those hate cells into self evaluation. It's time to become better than what was once an acceptable means to operate. Personally I'm sick of the hatred and self righteousness. I'm Catholic and I didn't hear the American people condemning Catholics for not leaving their churches behind and throw the church under the bus because of the priest sexually abusing the children in their parishes. All double standards because you'll have people saying Catholics had the choice to leave their church. Obama had a choice to leave as well but because he didn't he's now a racist and doesn't show good judgement. This is the craziest mindset and double standard that most of the american voters have put forth in awhile. Grow up and act like God's children not satin'w children. You reap what you sow.

Tony,
Are you having a difficult time with the word "disingenuous?"

Obama supporters always seem to assume that Clinton supporters will vote for Obama in November while the converse won’t be true. I think it would behoove Obama supporters not to be so presumptuous and be dismissive of Clinton supporters - nor to insult their intelligence (having advanced degrees, I assure you that I understand polysyllabic words, even if I sometimes do typos in my haste to post a comment).

After all, Hillary supporters are about half of the Democratic vote, and Obama won’t be able to win without us. And yes, there are people out there who, for one reason or another, don’t believe that Obama would make the best president. Some of us are indeed very educated, in fact.

I just find it utterly odd that many, many Obama supporters on the one hand speak of unity and hope and then they spew such vitriolic comments against those who may not hold the same opinion. Such self-righteous arrogance is distasteful. Honestly, the idea of voting for Obama wouldn’t be so unpalatable were it not for these condescending, smug supporters.

Come on people all of this talk about Obama's voters won't vote for Clinton in the fall election or vice a versa. This is stupid. These comments come be coming from anyone or anywhere. This is a blog people and the same goes for those cable newscasters. They give their opinion and some of you eat it up like hungry puppies. Think for yourself and most of those other democratic voters will vote for the nominee. Stop believing very stupid notion that's thrown out there. Personally I don't like anything about either Clinton but I will vote for the democratic nominee before any republican at this point. The damage is so great and another republican can only make it worse. Do the right thing and not the negative racial or stupid pride thing!

It is totally a man’s world no matter if he is white, black or Latino. I am disappointed with Richardson’s decision to endorse Obama. Did he not read or listen to Obama’s speech? Latinos were so left out of Obama’s Racial Unity speech. O’s speech was on the history of blacks and whites, their issues and perspectives. Latinos, the largest and growing minority, were not considered important enough to dedicate a snippet of who they are as a people and their role in the US. Latinos are invisible. Richardson said he would wait until he saw how Hillary did in the Texas and Ohio election to make his decision. Well, Hillary did well. When Richardson ran for president, it was a Clinton who gave him the opportunity to expand his resume. That is why he was able to say, “When I was the Ambassador to the UN and secretary of the Department of Energy, blah, blah.”
Real issues & Facts:
Obama against the Iraq war from the beginning? Obama was an Illinois (blue) state senator when the 29 US Democratic senators voted for the Iraq war. Hillary voted as her constituents wanted her to vote. It was in her state of New York that the WTC were hit. An estimated 3,051 children lost a parent in 9/11. Senator Feingold and Congressman Murtha were the leaders who were vocal in their opposition against the Iraq war. Obama decided to follow suit after being in the Senate 11 months. In addition, Obama, and Hillary, voted for $84 million to continue the war.
Obama disclosed the 2006 request on a long list of earmark requests. An $8 million was for “High Explosive Air Burst Technology Program." The request led to $1.3 million in funding for the program. The defense project was overseen by General Dynamics, one of the nation's largest military contractors. Obama's Illinois finance chairman, James S. Crown, serves on the company's board of directors and his family holds a sizable stake in the company. Even though it means soldiers and civilians are killed, wars are a profitable business.
Crown and his wife, Paula Crown, are members of Obama's National Finance Committee and have raised more than $200,000 for the Obama campaign.
Reverend Wright--- Obama’s spoken values and his platform is contradictory to his real actions. He lied for 3 days prior to his speech. He expected the public to believe that during those 20 years with Rev. Wright, his mentor and spiritual leader, he never heard or was in church when the insidious words were spoken. It was leaked out that the media had proof O was in church. As part of his speech, O was able to ward off this negative disclosure when he had to tell the truth he was in church. Also, he can not reject Rev. Wright because this church is his political base. Review his advisers and supporters.

Tony Rezko- another 17 year friendship with a soon-going-to- be federal felon who donated over $250,000 towards O’s successive campaigns. O selectively forgot how much Rezkco originally donated. O said Rezko was not expecting any favors. Yet Rezko is going to jail for his unethical wheeling and dealing/securing favors and influence peddling for the elected officials for whom he has fundraised or donated money.

Hillary is a fighter for whom it matters the most who is elected president. It will not make a difference for the Oprah’s, the Kennedy’s, and the Crown’s; it will be business as usual. But for the workers, their livelihood depends on the economy. Everyone needs or will need health insurance and they deserve that right. Hillary, a brilliant and experienced person, who happens to be a woman, has been advocating for everyone, young and old, all of her life.

with the support of the spanish communauty obama will be the democrat representativ in the us elections.

Hillary, a brilliant and experienced person, who happens to be a woman, has been advocating for everyone, young and old, all of her life.

David, Barack Obama has more talent and integrity than Hillary could possibly dream of. She has showed that the only thing she cares about is satisfying his enormous ego. I only regret that she didn't show her true colors earlier. It would have saved me the $2,000 dollars I donated to her campaign. That said should she happen to steal the election with her scorched earth tactics, I would still continue voting for her because the alternative is so horrible. Speaking of which whatever happened to the John McCain I used to admire.

Vote democrat. Even if it's Hillary.

Bemused please read your own condescending comments before you post. The one you left below reeks of all the things you claim Obama supporters are. I should also add that Hillarys sleezy tactics are what has earned her the derision she so richly deserves. She has made a fool of herself. Here is bemused ramble tirade. I think it speaks for itself.
