He isn’t necessarily supporting the idea. But House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer sees ample precedent for a Clinton-Obama (or Obama-Clinton) ticket.
“I think a lot of us believe that’s a possibility,” the Maryland Democrat said this week. “Look at Ronald Reagan and George Bush. They went at one another pretty hard – you know, voodoo economics – but became wonderful supply-side economics withing about six hours.
“It’s an amazing business we are in. Flexibility is, you know, a hallmark.”
Prompted by the capitol press corps Wednesday, Hoyer took reporters on a journey through American political history, with stops to observe John F. Kennedy’s decision to name erstwhile rival Lyndon Johnson his running mate, and the cabinet appointments of Abraham Lincoln.
“I don’t know how many of you have read ‘Team of Rivals,’ ” he said, referring to the Doris Kearns Goodwin’s 2005 book about the Lincoln administration.
“Three or four of the people who ran up against him in the convention ended up being in the cabinet,” Hoyer said. “Why do you do that? You do that because in a convention, in a party, you have various people representing various factions of the party. Obviously, the way to be most successful is to try to bring together the various elements in your party to try to cooperate with one another.”
Hoyer has remained neutral during the presidential primaries, saying he didn’t want his support for one or the other candidate to interfere with his management of the Democratic House caucus. Many rank-and-file members have taken sides, but Hoyer says the caucus remains unified.
“For one thing, I don’t see the candidates very deeply divided on the issues,” he said. “In a campaign, of course, you tend to focus on the differences, and therefore make them bigger than they are, but I think, generally speaking, they are pretty much in agreement. …
“I think that we have two extraordinarily able people running for president, and I think that the party would be pleased with either one of them and enthusiastic about either one of them. I think the party, with them together, would be equally pleased.”

ok
but hillary hurts obama - top of ticket or bottom
for many reasons - not the least of which is what she has to do to be considered
THE MATH FOR HILLARY'S PATH
the hillarrite strategy is all too clear :
her ONLY path to the nomination is by using racially motivated voters, cheaters and republicans to get there
it HAS already happened
she cheats by TOTALLY ignoring the VOTERS of michigan who would have certainly shown up to vote for Obama had he been on the ticket - if they had a choice - IF
the crossover voting is the ONLY reason she won texas
there were 3 million votes cast for the presidential nomination of the democratic party in texas
less than half that many were cast for democratic nominees to the US senate
less than half that many voted for any republican though three candidates popular in texas were still actively campaigning - mccain - (popular among the texas veterans and military communities and die hard red state republicans), ron paul (a texan whose immigration and tax stances are very popular in texas) and mike huckabee (from neighboring arkansas with the endorsement of the dallas morning news, famous texan - chuck norris and Bible-belt icon james dobson)
texas is a red state - bush's home state and a state that listens to limbaugh - you do the math
hillarys plan is to;
1) get the delegates by manipulating to get the florida and michigan and superdelegates counted inappropriately
and/or
2) have republicans and racists decide the democratic nomination by crossover voting in the remaining states
the math is clear, there is no other path for hillary to come close to 2024 delegates
most likely she will do both of the above
furthermore she has NO plans to release her 2006 tax forms before July (or more likely December, if then) - these are 2006 tax forms we are talking about - TWO THOUSAND AND SIX !!!!!!!!
make NO mistake - there is NO way hillary can even come close AT ALL in MISSISSIPPI without racists and republican crossover votes and hillary knows it
but SHE DOESN'T CARE
even if she cannot get quite enough racists to crossover and vote for her, she can still play the cheating card
only one question remains;
Do democrats want their nominee chosen by racists, cheaters and republicans ???

I wish everyone would stop all the speculation. What happens is meant to be. I think most of them keep talking just to hear themselves speak. Enough already!

Why does Steny automatically think Clinton is top of the ticket? Isn't she behind in delegates?

I'd be more disappointed if Obama took the job of Constitutionally-Mandated Bench Warmer in the Clinton/Clinton presidency than if he just bowed out and either stayed in the Senate or attempted a different office run (say, Illinois governor for the Executive experience credentials).
Playing 3rd Fiddle after Bill Clinton would be a complete waste of his abilities.

I echo Nessie there that the speculation isn't helpful. Neither one is helped by the other on the ticket. Taking the realistic approach (the supers finally stand up to the Clintons and say "no, you aren't ahead on votes, we gave you every chance to catch up, we won't throw it to you on inevitability"), then Obama-Clinton is the one to consider. Clinton anywhere on the ticket is anathema (and motivation) to Republicans, and I think a turn-off to Independents, especially those of us following the primary and being assured our nasty little votes shouldn't count. Same problem down the ticket--in a lot of places, a Clinton at the top will hurt the smaller race Ds.
Better to set off the Clinton rage and get a decent veep. Ideally someone with executive experience who could handle some issues, making a working partnership.

Doesn't Obama get it? This is another ploy by Clinton for those in Wyoming and Miss to vote for her. Notice this all came out AFTER she won(?) Texas and Ohio. She only said this so that the people in Wyoming and Miss will think Obama will be herVP and then go out and vote for her instead of him! It's just another one of her ploys and that is all it is. But let's say this occurs, I will not be voting for Obama because I don't want Hillary anywhere involved in his white house and neither should he be on her ticket. So if this happens either way, I will vote for McCain and I've never in my many many years of voting never voted for a Republican.

Once we get to the bottom of NAFTA-gate Hillary will be too lage a liability as a VP. Obama can do much better.
"Brodie told CTV reporters that the Clinton campaign had called the Canadian embassy in Washington to tell officials to take her anti-NAFTA rhetoric "with a grain of salt," said local media.
Around the same time, a news agency reported that a Canadian government memo detailed a meeting between Obama's chief economic advisor Austan Goolsbee and officials from the Canadian consulate in Chicago.
The memo reportedly said Goolsbee noted Obama's attacks on NAFTA should not be taken out of context, citing fiercely protectionist sentiment in Ohio about the pact and political positioning as a motivation.
Although CTV News had the Clinton allegations last month, it only reported then that Obama had tried to reassure the Canadians. A spokesman for CTV News was not immediately available for comment."

The last time two Democratic arch-enemies got together on a ticket was Kennedy-Johnson. That didn't work out too well for Kennedy.

Turnbull,
I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but of all the theories, the one saying LBJ killed JFK is the least worthy.
Note to all Dems;
Start to love both Hills and Bama now.
Call them Rodam-A-Bama!

touche P. Hill - very well point (probably not totally fair to mccain who has done more and has more experience that hillary but still a valid point)
hillary is so clearly the least ethical candidate of the remaining three

Which one wants to be known as Geraldine Ferraro II? If you don't know who she is, that's my point.
I would pay to see Katherine Harris vote in a Fla. Dem. revote. She could lead in the mockery because Mac already wrapped it up.

"Hillary Clinton won big victories Tuesday night in Ohio, Texas and Rhode Island. But she's now even further behind in the race for the Democratic nomination. How could that be? Math. It's relentless.
To beat Barack Obama among pledged delegates, Clinton now needs even bigger margins in the 12 remaining primaries than she needed when I ran the numbers on Monday—an average of 23 points, which is more than double what she received in Ohio.
Superdelegates won't help Clinton if she cannot erase Obama's lead among pledged delegates, which now stands at roughly 134. Caucus results from Texas aren't complete, but Clinton will probably net about 10 delegates out of March 4. That's 10 down, 134 to go. Good luck."

This woman is beginning to drive me nuts. Clinton fatigue is setting in. I've also heard from several of my friends that they are so upset with her that if she steals this thing they'll vote for McCain. I have to admit I'd entertain it too.

Any of you guys see that Bill Foster just got Obamaed? I think it's funny that the divorce records digging that doomed Blair Hull and Jack Ryan has now come full circle for the democ-rats.

There is the possibility that some of Bill Clinton's influence peddling schemes border on being illegal. Therefore we (the voters) have the right to see his and Hillary's income tax statement before we are saddled with her as the Democratic nominee. Before Hillary and Bill Clinton can be allowed to re-occupy the Oval Office the voters have to know how the Clintons amassed a multi million dollar fortune since leaving the White House. Especially in view or the facts that Bill Clinton has peddled his influence in Kazakhstan for Canadian billionaire Frank Giustra for the country's uranium rights; He has , or had, a financial partnership with the Emir of Dubai and his buddy Ron Burkle; Bill Clinton has earned millions ‘consulting’ for InfoUSA, an Iowa company that is under investigation for creating telemarketing lists used to fleece the elderly out of their life’s savings.
The voters have a right to know who is paying their bills. WE MUST SEE THEIR INCOME TAX STATEMENT!!!

Clinton’s NAFTA switcheroo and Canadian meddling
Well, the Canadian press is reporting that it was actually the Clinton campaign that sent word to the Canadian government not to take the anti-NAFTA talk to seriously.
Somehow, by the time the story made it to print, Canada’s conservative Prime Minister’s office had “leaked” a memo that said it was Obama’s campaign that was saying not to worry about NAFTA. The Clinton part of the story was ignored.
This begs two questions: what is Canada doing meddling in our election and why was the Clinton campaign's involvement in this dropped from the story?
From the Globe and Mail:
“The news agency quoted that source as saying that Mr. Brodie said that someone from Ms. Clinton'scampaign called and was "telling the embassy to take it with a grain of salt."
The story was followed by CTV's Washington bureau chief, Tom Clark, who reported that the Obama campaign, not the Clinton's, had reassured Canadian diplomats.”

The Repubs shot themselves in the foot with Jack Ryan. He should have stayed in the race. I'm usually a Democrat Party voter, but I didn't think his divorce "scandal" was a big deal. However, Foster's records make me sit up and take notice. Guy sounds like he's a control freak, though not any scarier than Over Ice.

Great post.
Isn't Obama ahead?
So why is the Baltimore Sun entertaining her as the Lead on the ticket?
That would have been like Huckabee-McCain as a headline. Unless there is a conspiracy to PUSH Clinton to the front. Baltimore Sun? Is there something we need to read BETWEEN the lines?
