Give Clinton respect, EMILY says: The Swamp

by Christi Parsons

Earlier today, the pro-choice group NARAL endorsed Barack Obama for president, a surprising development given that longtime abortion-rights advocate HIllary Clinton is still in the race.

Now fires back Ellen R. Malcom, president of EMILY's List, which tries to elect pro-choice Democratic women to office.

"I think it is tremendously disrespectful to Sen. Clinton . . . to not give her the courtesy to finish the final three weeks of the primary process," Malcom says. "It certainly must be disconcerting for elected leaders who stand up for reproductive rights and expect the choice community will stand with them."

Clinton, she writes, "held up the nomination of a FDA commissioner in order to force approval of Plan B," and also "spoke so eloquently during the Supreme Court nomination about the importance of protecting Roe vs. Wade."

NARAL president Nancy Keenan said earlier today that her group is going with the candidate they think "will secure the Democratic nomination and advance to the general election."

"That candidate is Sen. Obama," she said.

Why is it always ok to endorse Hillary before elections are through, but to endorse Obama is disrespectful?

Was it disrespectful for Emily's List to endorse back in what, January?

"No, you're helping Obama win!!! That's so disrespectful to Hillary!!!"

"I think it is tremendously disrespectful to Sen. Clinton . . . to not give her the courtesy to finish the final three weeks of the primary process,"

Now tell me again who has been disrespectful? I certainly don't remember Obama saying to drop out. Would it be the media and the pundits? Well in her own words...if you can't stand the heat. I would much rather see her supporters have respect for the party. With 75% claiming they won't vote the party, they are doing way more harm than good. Now I'm not new to this, but in all my years I have never seen numbers this high. So it can't be the issues...they are the same...so you tell me what it is.

The reason it was disrespectful for NARAL to endorse Obama now is because HRC has not lost and is still running...She did much for this group for years...We would not expect the " Turncoat Action" from this group that stands for life and truth....HRC 08'...BRING OUR SOLDIERS HOME NOW...

Superdelegates are going to blow it they dont hurry up and endorse Obama.

Clinton should get the respect that Huckabee got! NONE! She is going to hurt us badly. Supers/delegates need to help the voters decide by making their choice NOW. Clinton is not going to back down and is looking more feverishly than the REPUBLICANS are for something to hurt Barack. Cast her down!!!!!!!!!!!

Bill, firstly it is not merely the media and pundits calling for Hillary to drop out: it's superdelegates, party leaders, elected officials. Whether or not you can stand the heat (and, astonishingly, you appear to have overlooked the fact the Hillary most definitely can stand the heat), Ellen Malcolm is right that it is disrespectful. Secondly, obviously I can only give you my opinion, but I think one prevailing reason that many of Clinton's supporters will not support Obama's candidacy is that they think he lacks the substance and (dare I say it) experience it would take to make his presidency work. I am concerned that this, together with his lack of detailed knowledge (certainly in comparison to Clinton) of the issues important to Democrats - will make it difficult for him to weigh the advice of his advisors wisely. (But I suppose another reason many of Clinton's supporters may not support Obama is because many of them may be swing-voters and perhaps don't believe Obama's rhetoric).

For the National Abortion Rights Action League to be called pro-choice shows how far our language has been corrupted. Whats next, calling the North American Man Boy Love Association a male bonding group?

Wow. I have been so astonished by the treatment of Obama by these so-called progressive and liberated women. Steinem, Ferraro, Malcolm and others are really showing their true stripes now. If you are not marching lock step behind Hillary Clinton then you're not part of the "feminist majority" - hogwash. Note to self: none of these women crying foul are African American. Interesting. I thought the issue was preserving a woman's right to choose an abortion, not taking away a woman's right to choose her own candidate for president. Hypocrites.

Ellen Malcom's comments are disrespectful to NARAL, if anything...

I always knew that John Edwards would elect the next president and I was right.

It is not uncommon to see that women backstabs other women.

While NARAL has the right to endorse whoever it wants, it is also a human relationship issue. There is no apparent urgency for this announcement today instead of 3 weeks from now. Many democrats will support a democrat nominee, be it Clinton or Obama. The human relationships is that it reflects badly on NARAL to not stand by somebody who fought for their cause for many, many years. It is the one time when NARAL can really show its human side, it fails. Instead, it shows the political 'jump in the bandwagon' mentally. It makes people wonder if NARAL really cares about the people.

The Clinton supporters have such an overwhelming sense ofn entitlement. Everyone "owes" Hillary their undying and blind loyalty in their opinion. NARAL, Richardson, and on and on and on. It's like they believe that the Democratic Party and liberals in general exists solely to advance the Clintons . The Clinton's don't serve, they expect to be served. Their view of politics is essentially feudal, where everyone is bound to the wishes of their liege lord, and the Clintons view themselves as the King.

NARAL is showing itself short-sighted and ungrateful. I agree it was disrespectful, because Clinton has been such a strong abortion-rights supporter. NARAL is kicking dirt in the face of someone who helped them quite a bit. Obama has shown the kind of women's rights thinker he is: shot the finger at Hillary during a debate like a teenage boy (slick and funny - not), called a reporter 'sweetie' (story link to the right on the page I am typing this comment on), and let the press attack Hillary without saying a word. But hey, his camp can't WAIT to send out signals accusing anyone of racist cards being played whenever anyone dared criticize his lack of experience.

NARAL, you're a bunch of hypocrites, just trying to align yourself to who you think is going to be the nominee, even though that person has supported you NOT AT ALL. Short-sighted.

I thought women were better than this at protecting the interests of women.

I'm sure if Clinton was the one receiving the endorsement EMILY would have nothing to say. Pure ridiculousness. Let people endorse who they want

Ellen Malcom needs to keep her mouth shut. Is she serious? -- It's "disrespectful" for NARAL to endorse pro-choice candidate, Sen. Obama "in her opinion" because it failed to pick her favorite pro-choice candidate, HRC?

Get a grip on reality! What's disrespectful to the highest degree are all these feminists saying they'll vote for McCain over Obama! Go right ahead, punch your ballot for McCain, and see where all your so-called "reproductive rights" end-up -- in the toilet!

Women better wake up. We're better than this. We're not monolithic; we have brains and we have fought for the right to vote and choose.

"Obama has shown the kind of women's rights thinker he is: shot the finger at Hillary during a debate like a teenage boy (slick and funny - not), called a reporter 'sweetie' (story link to the right on the page I am typing this comment on), and let the press attack Hillary without saying a word. "
Wow, you really got it wrong, "sweetie".

For the record - would each of 'women for women' posters please let us know if Condi were running as a republican (Condi is pro choice) if you would back her over Obama.

Do tell ... because I actually don't understand your position.

Ok Sharonevolving, you are certainly entitled to your opinion but come on, put up or shut up, name one time that the Obama campaign cried racism over something someone has said or done! I don't need two or three, just one example - what you're probably talking about are the numerous observations in the press regarding Obama's race. I think Obama and his campaign has really gone out of their way to make the candidate's race a non-factor in this race. Unlike Clinton's campaign which attacks any woman or women's organization that doesn't bow down and pay their respects to the Goddess Clinton!
Remember, it was Clinton who said "hard working Americans, white Americans" are her supporters.
Think about it this way, why are so many of Ms. Clinton's colleagues in the Senate supporting Obama? If she has done so much for the party, shouldn't the establishment be lining up behind her right now to save her dying campaign?

Respect?

Hillary should get what she gives.

None!

Give Hillary respect hmmm...Maybe when she earns it. She has lost all mine.

As someone who has been actively watching and listening, there are many hypocrites and backstabbers that have abandoned the Clinton's after they stood with them in their time of need. In fact, many of them after now having two cents in their pockets are the "elites" of the party. I've had enough, the Democratic party has abandoned me, therefore, I am changing my political affiliation to none. My vote will no longer be taken for granted.

Disrespectful! Disrespectful! What respect?

Hillary Clinton lost most of my respect — and I daresay a good chunk of her self-respect — more than a decade ago when after her then 50-something husband committed adultry with a 22-year-old woman she stayed with him. AFTER Gennifer Flowers, AFTER Paula Jones and AFTER Lord knows how many other women.

Look, I'm sure Hillary's got her reasons for sticking it out with one of recent history's favorite American presidents (namely a child), but couldn't she have trotted out a trial separation, a public spat or something, ANYTHING, to show that women (and men for that matter) don't have to have to make their beds with dogs (and, yes, Bill Clinton behaved like a D-O-G, dog) to get ahead in America. Apparently, not.

So Ellen R. Malcom needs to go somewhere else and talk about somebody else when it comes to disrespect, because Hillary doesn't have any respect left to dis.

Regardless of NARALs timing, lets be clear that Obama has a consistent record on abortion issues.

In 1997, Obama voted against SB 230, which would have turned doctors into felons by banning so-called partial-birth abortion, & against a 2000 bill banning state funding. "...these bills didn't include anything...to protect the health of the mother."
http://www.ontheissues.org/Social/Barack_Obama_Abortion.htm

"The Republicans...loved to hold votes on 'partial birth' and 'born alive'. . . because they wanted to pigeonhole Democrats" said Pam Sutherland, the president and CEO of the Illinois Planned Parenthood Council. Obama said "My members are being attacked. We need to figure out a way to protect members and to protect women"
http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2007/07/obama-abortion-.html
Sutherland convinced him to vote "present." A "present" was as good as an outright "no" because it kept the bills from reaching the majority needed to pass.

April 28, 2008: Obama Criticizes Federal Partial Birth Abortion Ban - Claims dangerous procedure needed for women's health
http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2008/apr/08042805.html

In 8 years in IL senate, Obama voted 129 times PRESENT out of 4000 votes cast. That is only 3% yet he passed over 800 bills!
www.nytimes.com/imagepages/2007/07/29/us/politics/20070730_OBAMA_GRAPHIC.html
Illinois legislators often vote "present" and for a variety of reasons. Sometimes blocs of lawmakers do it as a protest...in other cases, lawmakers do it to signal objections to the details of a measure that they support in principle.

That such a strong group defending women's rights would cave (or be forced to cave) is incredibilty disheartening. Let us all keep our sisters in prayer during this trying time.

NARAL is a bunch of See you Next Tuesday club members. They should at least hold of for three weeks and endorse the nominee. This reflects how See You Next Tuesday they are. They dont show respect for someone who has led the fight to protect reproductive rights during a time in which women have been attacked by this right wing inept president and his administration.

I was extremely angry to see NARAL support Obama. If there ever was a symbol of a strong female force who has always worked for the issues which you endorse, it is Hillary. She also happens to be the ONLY candidate who can beat McCain in the fall. Doesn't anyone remember the fiasco of McGovern? I'm sorry to say that Obama sports the same crash and burn characteristics.
You have sadly contributed to the future loss of any balance in the Supreme Court. In doing this, you most like have caused the eventual banning of abortion rights in the future - the very thing you fight for now.

NARAL has made their point, just as the Superdelegates, the people of America, and John Edwards did: Obama is best quaified for the job.

Clinton has run a disgraceful campaign, a trainwreck. She dug her own grave and she's going to fall in it May 20th, and she will fall hard.

If only she had half of Obama's diplomacy, grace, compassion and intellligence whe would've become President.
But for now, we all witness a great experience, it took a looooong time, but the next President really cares about us all and that man is Barack Obama.
