You say tomato, FDA says dunno

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has taken its hits this week for warning consumers about tomatoes that might cause salmonella poisoning, and its subsequent admission that maybe something other than tomatoes was causing people to fall ill from salmonella.

Tomato growers, packers, grocers and restaurants raised a collective cry of foul over the FDA's suggestion. They've lost millions of dollars because certain tomatoes have been taken off store shelves and out of recipes at the FDA's suggestion.

But harsh words from tomato merchants is nothing for the embattled FDA, which has been verbally bludgeoned for the better part of a year by Michigan Democratic Rep. John Dingell. He's used his House Energy and Commerce Committee to zero in on FDA practices and personalities.

One subcommittee under Dingell, Oversight and Investigations, has focused seven hearings in the last year on food safety and the FDA. The subcommittee is chaired by Dingell's alter ego, Rep. Bart Stupak, also from Michigan Democrat.
